Grongy is a thesis assistant built to be verified rather than hidden: every citation resolves to a real paper, AI-written passages are marked, and drafts can be shared read-only with a supervisor. The features that help students cheat are the ones we refuse to build.
The problem
Trying to control AI use isn’t working
Detectors don’t work, and everyone knows it
AI detectors produce false positives on non-native English and miss lightly edited output entirely. Accusing a student based on a similarity score is a disciplinary case you can lose. Banning the tools just moves the use somewhere you can’t see.
The fabricated citation is the real risk
The damage isn’t the writing — it’s a bibliography full of plausible-looking papers that don’t exist, found at the thesis defence or, worse, after publication. General chatbots invent references by design, because they have no library to check them against.
Supervisors have no view of the process
You see a finished chapter. You can’t see how it got there, which claims came from a source, or which the model supplied. Supervision turns into guesswork.

Every citation resolves to a real paper
Sources come from open academic databases (OpenAlex, Crossref) or the student’s own uploaded PDFs. A citation the library can’t verify is removed before the student ever sees it — the model is not permitted to invent one.
AI-written text is marked, not hidden
Passages the assistant produced are tracked in the document, and the student can export a usage disclosure listing what was AI-assisted. Grongy is built to be declared, not concealed.
We refuse the evasion features on purpose
No humanizer, no detector-bypass, no “make this undetectable”. We have been asked and we have declined. It is not a roadmap item — it is the opposite of the product.
Read-only drafts you can actually review
Students share a link; you read the draft and its sources without an account, without editing it. Now supervision has a shared document to work from.
The work stays the student’s
Documents live in the student’s own browser by default and export to Word, PDF, LaTeX and BibTeX at any time. Nothing is locked in, so there’s nothing to renegotiate at renewal.
Structure and method, not just prose
